There are two key points that I would like to share. One as a martial arts enthusiast, and the other as a disabled veteran. I have studied martial arts off and on over the last 20 years. As an enthusiast, it wasn’t until I met ShiFu Cook that I realize how watered down and ineffective my previous training had been. The style I trained under him is a brutal military combat system with techniques designed for true self defense. It is practical, effective, and efficient.

As a disabled veteran I tend to be injury prone. ShiFu Cook has immense knowledge in functionality exercises. He has assisted me in rehabilitation from bulging discs, sprained joints, ankle surgery, weight loss and general fitness. Literally, he took me from the most basic of functionality and built a foundation to advanced body weight mechanics. He created and oversaw a rehabilitation program after my ankle surgery that lasted four months. Afterword, I was back at training full time and playing ice hockey games. I never went to physical therapy!

I have had the pleasure of training with ShiFu Cook for 5 years. He has been my mentor and a true friend. You would be lucky to have him involved in your life. If you are looking for real martial arts, look no further.

Master Cook is outstanding with terrific skills and the ability to effectively teach. He has profoundly deep understanding of the arts and has tremendous power, speed and focus. He is a dedicated teacher who personalizes instruction to each student. He is patient and encouraging, striving to help the student achieve their goals. I’ve been around the dojo for many years; he is not my first instructor. I have been a student of Master Cook for over 5 years and feel very fortunate to have him as my teacher.

I’ve been studying Qi Gong and Tai Qi over 25 years and Grandmaster Cook is simply the best teacher and guide I’ve ever had. While his knowledge of fighting applications and energy skills is supreme making his lessons detailed and thorough, he is also very caring, humble, patient and personable. He excels at teaching to the level of those he’s leading, patiently repeating for nervous newbies and expertly drawing out the full potential in those already skilled. If you are looking to get real and practical results from your training, Grandmaster Cook is the teacher you want to study under.

I’ve been training in martial Arts since the ‘70’s. I’ve studied under good, bad, and indifferent teachers. Master Cook is great. His dedication to the Fundamentals and relating every technique to those fundamentals is what impresses me most. While teaching he will stop and show how what he is teaching in that moment emerges from the fundamentals. His knowledge of the history of the Arts is amazing and I believe that this is not a trivial thing. Too much of the rich tradition of the Arts has been stripped away in recent decades in the name of profit. We owe a debt to the Founders and those who came after them. Without our lineages, we would not be training. In Body, Mind, and Spirit, Master Cook honors and continues the legacy of those predecessors. In a world where extravagant and unearned titles are all around us, he is a true Master of The Way.

I’ve known Master Cook for 20 years. Beginning in the early 2000’s through the end of the decade, I trained with a dedicated group of students in Master Cook’s backyard through all seasons and all weather conditions from blazing Summer heat to deep Winter freeze. He is a man that leads by example participating in every aspect of what he teaches. He is very much “hands on”. He builds in each student a foundation that brings to the student an understanding of fundamentals that the student can apply throughout their training, which leads to an understanding of the concepts behind and within movements making the learning of the martial arts a holistic process. This also allows the student to recognize similar and common points present in all martial arts.

Since moving away from Master Cook, I’ve gone on to train in Judo and BJJ. The years of training under Master Cook and the foundation and skills developed during those years has helped me to use aspects of everything I’ve learned enabling me to be a more complete martial artist. Teaching is a passion for Master Cook. What I appreciate most about him is his incredible depth of knowledge of a variety of martial arts. This gives him great flexibility allowing him to be able to teach students from raw beginners to people who already hold high rank in styles other than what he teaches. The greatest part is that he invests 100% of himself into every students development.
